Hijab berasal dari hajaban yang artinya menutupi, pemisah. Dari arti kata tersebut dapat kita simpulkan bahwa hijab adalah pemisah atau pembatas, antara satu dengan yang lainya.

Perintah untuk berhijab telah Allah Swt dan Rasul Saw perintah lewat Al Quran dan Hadits berikut :

“Hai Nabi! Katakanlah kepada istri-istrimu, anak-anak perempuanmu dan istri-istri orang mu’min: “Hendaklah mereka mengulurkan jilbabnya ke seluruh tubuh mereka. Yang demikian itu supaya mereka lebih mudah untuk dikenal, karena itu mereka tidak diganggu.” (Q.S. Al-Ahzab: 59)

“Dan katakanlah kepada wanita yang beriman: “Hendaklah mereka menahan pandangannya, dan memelihara kemaluan-nya, dan janganlah mereka menampakkan perhiasannya, kecuali yang (biasa) nampak dari padanya.” (Q.S An-Nur: 31)
